'Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has a long history in the church, but gained immense popularity as a result of several visits that Jesus made to a young lady - Margaret Mary Alocoque, living in Paray le Monial, France. The visits continued when Margaret Mary became a Visitation nun. During the most famous of the visits, on June 16, 1675, Jesus appeared to Sister (now St.) Margaret Mary while she was praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament. He showed forth His heart; surrounded by thorns, glowing with flames and surmounted by a cross.
