His own birth and mission had been foretold for centuries, the promised forerunner of the Christ arrived upon the scene leading a life of extreme austerity - in the desert - and preaching a firebrand message of repentance. Known to history as John the Baptist, he was the son of Zecharia and Elizabeth - a close relative of Mary, and therefore John was a cousin to Jesus. Jesus and John first met while both were still in the womb, just after Mary heard the great news of her own pregnancy, she also learned that Elizabeth, though very old, had conceived. Mary went to help her, and when Elizabeth "heard her greeting, the child in [her] womb leapt for joy." John's preaching thoroughly irritated King Herod and his wife, and she eventually tricked the King into commanding John's execution. Jesus said of John that he was the greatest Old Testament prophet, and yet, in a remarkable twist, declared that the least born into the kingdom of God is greater still. St. John the Baptist is the patron saint of teachers. He has two feast days, on June 24 and on August 29. © 2006.
