Little is known for certain of St. George. He was early on described as a Christian knight, born in Cappadocia who lived in the early part of the 4th century. The iconography that surrounds him is owing to the most enduring legend of him: that he was riding one day in the province of Lybia, and happened upon a city named Sylene. The inhabitants of the city had been terrorized by a terrible dragon who lived nearby in a marshy swamp. Though they banded together many times to try and kill the beast, they were always driven away by his terrible breath, and finally settled into a routine of placating the monster by feeding him two sheep a week. When the sheep ran scarce, they were forced to draw lots to offer the beast a villager instead. The lot fell, tragically, to the King"s own daughter. After unsuccessfully trying to purchase a substitute, she was dressed as a bride and led to her doom. But fortunately, our hero, St. George, happened upon the scene, and pierced the dragon with his lance (the scene depicted in the medal) and, borrowing the girdle from the King"s daughter, put it around the dragon"s neck, whereupon the girl led the beast, like a lamb, into the city. The people were still in great fear, and George offered to kill the beast, if they would believe in Christ and be baptized. They did, and he fulfilled his promise. The King offered him half his kingdom, which the Saint refused, asking him, instead, to "maintain churches, honor the clergy, and be mindful of the poor." Later, under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian, many Christians were wavering in their faith, and to set a good example, George boldly declared his faith in Christ, and was tortured in many ways and finally killed. St. George is the patron saint of Boy Scouts, Soldiers, Farmers and England. His feast day is April 23. © 2006Click here to see our selection of chains: Chains This item will ship separately from our warehouse, if you have other items in your order they will arrive separately.
