St. Jude is the patron saint of hospitals; his feast is celebrated on October 28th. © 2006 In 1531, in what is now Mexico City, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, a native who had recently become a Christian. She asked him to deliver a message to the Bishop: that she wanted him to build a temple there in her honor, where she could show her love and compassion to all the people. The Bishop naturally was skeptical of the claims, and asked Juan to invite the Lady to perform a sign so that he could know that the message was, in fact, from Heaven, and not from Juan"s imagination. On December 12, she gave the Bishop more than he bargained for: she filled his apron with beautiful roses " which should not have been growing in the middle of winter " and when he presented the sign to the Bishop, immediately, in the presence of all in the room, an image of the beautiful Lady appeared on his apron (tilma), which he had been using to hold the roses. The miraculous image can be seen to this day in the basilica in Mexico City, and is visited by 20 million pilgrims each year. ©2006
